The OPENUS4ALL consortium successfully organised a three-day Bootcamp Training Programme at Kadir Has University in Istanbul from 2 to 4 September 2025. The event brought together educators, researchers, school leaders and higher education representatives from Greece, Turkey, Spain and the United Kingdom, creating a shared space for professional exchange, experimentation and co-creation.
The bootcamp aimed to strengthen participants’ capacity to design and implement inclusive, competence-based learning experiences by integrating STEAM education, Open Schooling and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), supported by the OPENUS4ALL digital platform. Throughout the programme, participants explored how these three approaches can work together to address classroom diversity, promote learner agency and connect education with real-life challenges.
The first day focused on establishing the pedagogical foundations of the project. Participants were introduced to the core objectives of OPENUS4ALL and to the rationale behind the integrated STEAM–Open Schooling–UDL methodology. Discussions highlighted the limitations of traditional teaching and assessment practices and the need for more flexible, inclusive and interdisciplinary approaches. Particular attention was given to the role of STEAM in fostering creativity, problem-solving and collaboration, as well as to UDL as a framework for anticipating learner variability and removing barriers from the outset. Open Schooling was presented as a way to extend learning beyond classroom walls by engaging families, local communities and real-world contexts.
The second day was dedicated to hands-on workshops that allowed participants to experience the methodology in practice. In the biochemistry laboratory, participants worked on a STEAM activity focused on marine pollution, combining scientific experimentation, data collection, digital tools and reflective discussion. The workshop demonstrated how environmental issues can be transformed into meaningful learning experiences that connect science with social responsibility and community engagement. In the afternoon, a second practical workshop addressed natural disasters, with a focus on earthquakes and resonance.
The third day concentrated on methodology integration, activity design and platform use. Participants explored how STEAM, Open Schooling and UDL can be combined into coherent learning pathways and how interlevel strategies can support continuity across grades, disciplines and learner readiness levels. Special emphasis was placed on evaluation, including formative and summative assessment, the use of rubrics and the alignment of activities with 21st-century competences. During the computer lab sessions, participants were introduced to the OPENUS4ALL platform, learning how to create activities, define competencies, set evaluation criteria and monitor learner progress.
The OPENUS4ALL Bootcamp concluded with a collective reflection on key lessons learned and next steps. Participants expressed strong interest in piloting the methodology and platform in their educational contexts and in continuing collaboration within the project framework. The event marked an important milestone in advancing inclusive, innovative and community-connected education across Europe.
